Anyone who feels led to seek Baptism for themselves or for a son or daughter is welcome to talk to the Minister Contact Us, about the meaning of Baptism and the responsibilities it brings with it. Once you are ready, we will be happy to make arrangements for the baptism to take place. Jesus sent his followers out to teach and baptise.
As his followers today, we welcome every opportunity to continue this work of baptising.
Baptism signifies the action and love of God in Christ, through the Holy Spirit, and is a seal upon the gift of grace and the response of faith and it is administered in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, with water.
Normally, the Sacrament is administered during Sunday morning worship.
What does Baptism mean?
Membership: Anyone, adult or child, who is baptised is thereby accepted into the Membership of the Church. This membership is not just of your congregation, or even just of the Church of Scotland, but of the worldwide Church of Jesus Christ.
Grafting: The idea of "grafting" is sometimes used to describe this. Just as, in gardening, a branch can be taken from one tree and grafted to another from which it draws its life, or skin can be taken from one area and grafted in another, so one who becomes a member of the Church is “grafted” into what the Bible calls "The Body of Christ" and draws his/her life from him.
Washing: The water is a sign for the washing away of sin. A little child like yours has not sinned, but he/she will soon be caught up, as we all are, in the sinfulness of the world. Jesus died to wash away that sinfulness and the barrier it creates between us and God. Your child's baptism assures you and enables you to assure him/her that the good that flows from Jesus' death comes personally to him/her.
Adoption: Being united to Christ through Baptism, your little one is declared to be God's adopted son or daughter.
The Gift of the Spirit: God promises to those who are baptised the gift of His Holy Spirit. He will be with him/her to strengthen and guide.
Eternal Life: With that goes the promise of Life a sharing already in the new life that Jesus came to bring, and the assurance that His love for us will not cease, even when we die.
"Let the little Children Come ...": From earliest times the Church has believed it to be right to baptise not only those who can declare their faith, but also their children.
